West Coast Chalice is an album made from songs of contemporary women songwriters of the west coast of the United States. The album began as a dare to make Laura Veirs' song "Junkyard Dog" into some sort of Soundgarden sounding thing. The idea of making a grunge album was very appealing and then the condition of making women's songs (women in the sphere of influence) into grunge was decided. It was created over the Winter of 2012/2013 mostly with great help from drummer Braydn Krueger.
Krueger was in between touring with his Anacortes based group "The Lonely Forest." And, at the time of conception, Blau had just returned from touring, playing bass with the band EARTH of which Lori Goldston (former cellist of Nirvana) had been playing cello in also. Little known fact is that Goldston also rips on the electric guitar, it was her first instrument. Check out Lori Goldston's leads on Michael Row and Blueberry.
Jacob Navarro, Brian Tottenham and Doug Cassidy are Anacortes music staples. Jake and Brian were in a dance band with Karl Blau in the 90s known as Captain Fathom. Doug Cassidy has been in every other band from Anacortes since the early 90s. Most grungily notable, Cassidy's band with Bryan Elliot - Bow Hill.
Recorded by Karl Blau at Hot Soup, Anacortes on 4 track reel to reel - Blau playing guitar, bass and singing with Braydn Krueger on drums. Special appearances on lead guitar by Lori Goldston, Brian Tottenham, Doug Cassidy and Jacob Navarro.
