Michael Row (Kanako Pooknyw)

from by West Coast Chalice

My first impression of Kanako Koopnyw was her singing at the Capitol Theater in Olympia in the year 2000's Yo-Yo A-Go-Go festival that took place all over downtown Olympia. She was performing a solo set, standing in the middle of stage in a 10-gallon cowboy hat that felt like an umbrella. She was strapped into an acoustic guitar and had a gigantic band accompanying her, who were all sitting down. My friend Nikki standing next to me tells me "that's someone to watch for." The following years I would look forward to seeing the band Lyre Bird of which she sang in and played guitar.

This song "Michael Row" has a near and dearness to my heart, it was one of the first songs I heard from Lyre Bird (sometimes spelled Liar Bird), yet only through learning the song did I learn what the song was about, a haunting tale that many of us can relate to about a friend with AIDS and coming to terms someone you love's waning health. Catch the amazing band "Broken Water" which Kanako leads with drums and voice, they're probably playing in your town next week.
